L'imposante forteresse de Tarascon se dresse comme une sentinelle dominant les eaux du Rhône. Située durant le Moyen-Age à la fontière du Comté de Provence, face à Beaucaire et aux terres françaises, le château impose l'idée de défense. En 1400, Louis II duc d'Anjou et comte de provence entreprend l'édification du château. Les travaux furent poursuivis par Louis III puis René I. Sous le règne du "Bon Roi René" la forteresse s'éclipse derrière le palais Renaissance. Au XVIIIème siècle, l'ancienne demeure des comtes d'Anjou fut vidée de ses merveilles d'antan afin d'accueillir prisonniers de guerre et forçats en route pour le bagne. Au XIXè s., avec la présence du TGI à Tarascon, il sera promu maison d'arrêt jusqu'en 1926.
