Finding a beach is easy. Finding a beach with free parking, especially in summer, is often a challenge. However, there are still corners of the Mediterranean where you can lay down your towel without having to pay for parking.
From the vast beaches at the mouth of the Rhône to the secluded coves of the Côte d'Azur, passing by the creeks of the Var, we have listed for you the beaches in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur where parking is free, or at least accessible without paying at a meter – even if this sometimes implies few spaces or more discreet access.
The notion of free access is also an indicator of the quality of tourism hospitality and the "value" placed on visitors: either by considering them welcome guests, or as a source of revenue from which one can extract a little, or sometimes a lot, of money. Tourist pressure or a lack of space does not systematically justify charging for parking. It is above all a mindset and a consideration towards visitors, as well as a matter of land-use policy.
The guide is categorized by department, Bouches-du-Rhône, Var, Alpes-Maritimes, and the Southern Alps, to help you plan your swimming outings stress-free this summer.
This list is established for the heart of the summer season. In spring and autumn, you can sometimes enjoy better reception conditions in certain municipalities. In case of errors or omissions, do not hesitate to contact our editorial team to help us improve this article.
Bouches‑du‑Rhône (13)
Camargue
The advantage of the Camargue is that its wide-open spaces make parking easy and mostly free.
🟢 Saintes‑Maries‑de‑la‑Mer : Clos du Rhône & Crin Blanc beach
Large, free parking lots available.
🟢 Salin‑de‑Giraud (Arles) : Beauduc beach, Piémanson beach
Natural, with free parking, popular for their setting.
🟢 Port‑Saint‑Louis du Rhône: Carteau, Olga, Napoléon
Free parking, but with views of industrial zones.
Côte Bleue and Étang de Berre
Aside from a few exceptions on the Côte Bleue, almost all beach parking lots on the Étang de Berre and the Côte Bleue are free. This is one of the reasons these destinations have kept their charm with a local and popular clientele, in the best sense of the term.
🟢 Martigues
Most of the city's beaches have street parking or dedicated free parking lots. This is the case for Carro beach / Carro harbor (Martigues) with free quay-side parking, Arnette beach (Carro) with nearby parking, and the very popular Sainte‑Croix beach, although its parking can get saturated in summer.
In the town center for Ferrières, parking can be time-limited (blue disc) or sometimes free.
🟢 Fos‑sur‑Mer: Cavaou, Grande Plage / St Gervais
Parking is free. The lots are generally located back from the beaches, with direct pedestrian access. Although located near industrial zones, these lots are vast and free.
🟢 Port de Bouc: free parking at Aigues Douces, Bottai and Ours
🔴 Ensues la Redonne: Grand Méjean – Petit Méjean & Corniche beaches. Parking is free... but the area is closed to tourists in summer (vehicle access reserved for locals).
🟢 Istres: Whether on the side of Romaniquette or Ranquet, there are free parking lots. Istres is a tourist and popular destination highly appreciated by locals.
🟢 Saint-Chamas: Free parking near Cabassons beach.
🟢 Berre l'Etang: The parking lots near Passet and Champigny beaches are very large and also free.
🟢 Marignane and 🟢 Châteauneuf-les-Martigues: Jaï beach and in Marignane both benefit from a large free parking lot in each municipality.
🟢 Rognac: Free public parking near Robinsons beach.
🟢 Vitrolles: Free parking for Marettes beach.
🟢 Carry le Rouet: Rouet and Cap Rousset beaches benefit from free parking, but they tend to fill up quickly in summer.
🟢 Sausset-les-Pins: Free parking near the municipality's beaches: Corniche, petit et grand nid
🔴 Le Rove: As with Ensues, the parking lots at Niolon and La Vesse are free... but reserved for local residents. So, forget about it.
🟢 Marseille / Corbières / La Lave: Free parking near the beaches.
Between Marseille and La Ciotat
🟡 Marseille: You can find free spaces at Pointe Rouge, notably at the Digue Ouest parking, or otherwise in residential zones. On the coastal road and at Les Goudes, free parking exists, but it is often saturated. Finally, around Prado, you will have to walk a few hundred meters to find free parking in a residential area, but it also saturates very quickly.
🔴 Cassis: No free parking to our knowledge near the beaches in Cassis.
🟡 La Ciotat: Depending on the area, you can benefit from one or two free hours in parking lots and areas near the beaches. Otherwise, you have to walk a bit and move a few hundred meters away from the coastal zones to park in a free residential zone, but it is inevitably highly sought after and saturated in summer.
Peyrolles
🔴 Lac de Peyrolles (13 - Peyrolles-en-Provence): The parking for this leisure center switches to a mandatory flat rate of €4.00 per day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in July-August.
Var
West-Var
Some towns like Six-Fours-les-Plages have implemented a proactive hospitality policy by offering free parking to visitors to enjoy the beaches. But it's a rare example in this sector.
🔴 Saint-Cyr sur Mer: No free parking near the Lecques and Madrague beaches. You have to park much further away, in the town center, and walk about 1 to 2 km.
🟡 Bandol: The Deferrari parking lot was the only free parking in the city, but it was drastically reduced due to construction for the new park and moved to the old stadium.
🟡 Sanary: The large town center parking offers one free hour. That's a bit short to enjoy the beach. Beaches located west of the Pointe de la Cride (Baie de Cousse and Gorguette) can benefit from rare free street parking spaces. Elsewhere, it is generally paid.
🟢 Six Fours les plages: Unlike the shopping town center or certain ultra-busy access points, a large part of the big coastal parking lots in Six-Fours are free. For example, all along Bonnegrâce beach and the Coudoulière and towards the Brusc pier (for the Embiez island), you find large, non-paid public parking spaces. And for Charmettes, parking is regulated and paid, but 4 hours are offered, which leaves plenty of time to enjoy the beach without getting too much sunburn.
🟡 La Seyne sur Mer: If the Sablettes sector is paid, Mar Vivo has free blue zones limited to 3 hours, which is very convenient. But you will have to arrive early or be lucky, as the number of spaces is limited.
🟡 Saint-Mandrier: The town center is paid, but heading towards Cavalas and Saint-Asile you can find a few free spaces.
From Toulon to La Londe
The municipalities from Toulon to La Londe are among the best examples in the region: the beaches are magnificent, and the mayors' policy is to welcome visitors with pleasure by offering them free parking. Despite space constraints, the developments were intelligently made to allow the development of a quality tourism economy, favoring local trade and respecting visitors.
🟢 Toulon: Mourillon Beaches: This is the Var exception par excellence. Despite its high attendance, the city offers parking around the Mourillon Beaches. It's the most practical spot in the area not to worry about the parking meter. Near Tour Royale / Pipady, parking is also free.
🟢 Le Pradet is also a good student: The Acacia d'Argent parking lot is free and allows access to the Monaco and Bonnettes beaches. This is also the case at Oursinières: parking in the immediate vicinity of the beach and the small port is free, as well as at the Garonne parking lot.
🟢 Carqueiranne: The city offers several dedicated zones, notably the Parking de la mer (free) which facilitates access to Pradon Beach. In the nearby town center, the Rebufat parking is also free and allows you to reach the seaside on foot.
🟡 Hyères: Several parking lots are free in Hyères: the Almanarre one, which is very large with 650 spaces, Salins (Vieux Salins), Badine, Ayguade (time-limited), Pesquiers, Capte, Bergerie, or the Darboussières one, but it is very limited in spaces. On the other hand, you should avoid the Tour Fondue and Madrague sectors which are paid.
🟢 La Londe-les-Maures: Argentière, Tamaris, and Miramar beaches are free. Be careful, heading east towards Léoube / Pellegrin and Estagnol, they are private and very expensive.
From Bormes to the Gulf of Saint-Tropez
🟠 In Bormes-les-Mimosas: Estagnol and Cabasson are paid and quite expensive because they are managed by private operators. At La Favière, the parking lots are paid. To find free spots, you have to move away from the seaside and park in a blue zone (1h30 free only).
🟡 Le Lavandou has a few free parking lots near the beaches: 80 spaces for l'Anglade, 300 spaces at the market parking (Town Center Beach), La Fossette and Aiguebelle (but limited spaces), and Cavalière which also has numerous spaces.
At Saint-Clair, it's paid.
🟡 The Rayol Canadel: Free spaces but very limited.
🟡 Cavalaire: The Pardigon / D-Day beach parking lot is free for 2 hours in summer. The town center one is under construction (details link)
🟠 La Croix Valmer: No free parking near the main beaches. Only the small 1st DFL parking lot is free but very small.
🔴 Ramatuelle: No free parking near the beaches. Only in the village, then using the free summer shuttle.
🟠 Saint-Tropez: Few free spaces, but by moving away from the town center, you can find a few very small parking lots: At Salins, at Canoubiers.
🔴 Cogolin and 🔴 Grimaud: No free parking near the beaches.
From Sainte Maxime to the Estérel
This sector adopts a mixed strategy: to park near the beaches in the town center you have to pay, but as soon as you go to the peripheral beaches, parking is often free. In truth, it's above all a common model of paid parking in the town center, except that here, many beaches are also located in the town center.
🟡 Sainte-Maxime, apart from the town center, there are several free parking lots near the beaches of Nartelle, Madrague, and Elephant.
🟢 Roquebrune sur Argens / Les Issambres: Gaillarde Beach / Free accessible parking and Petit and Grand Nid Beach, Bonne Eau Creek, Tardieu Creek: free parking nearby but very limited.
🟡 Fréjus: The Saint-Aygulf sector has several street parking zones along the cornice and on the avenues set back that remain free. Getting closer to the town center, it is generally all paid.
🟡 Saint-Raphaël: If town center parking is free, it is by going out on the D559 / Corniche Road that you find the possibility to park for free and enjoy the most beautiful creeks and beaches of the municipality, and notably at the free parking lot of Débarquement beach, Togo parking (Agay), Camp Long beach, Petit Caneiret creek.
Alpes‑Maritimes (06)
Plage de la Gravette Antibes
Free parking near the beaches is clearly not in the mindset of the mayors of the Alpes Maritimes. Apart from rare exceptions, or tricks like using the Cap 3000 shopping center parking lot, parking near the beaches is paid in the department.
From Théoule to Antibes
🔴 Théoule: No free parking in the town center, you have to venture into residential areas.
🟡 Mandelieu: A large free parking lot on the banks of the Siagne, a stone's throw from Robinson beaches.
🟠 Cannes: Parking is generally paid everywhere except for the large beach parking lot on Rue Stephen Liégeard in La Bocca with 183 free spaces.
🔴 Golfe Juan: No free parking offer near the beaches.
🟠 Antibes: There are a few rare free parking lots in the municipality, but they are far from the beaches. In the Cap d'Antibes sector, a few free parking spaces are available on the street but in very limited quantity. Most of the streets there are private.
You can park for free near La Siesta / Marineland. But these pebble beaches have a very limited interest compared to those in the town center.
From Villeneuve Loubet to Nice
🔴 Villeneuve Loubet: Not really any free parking offer near the beaches.
🟠 Cagnes sur Mer: Difficult to find free parking near the beaches. A few streets near Cros and Rue de Paris are free but with very limited capacities.
🟡 Saint-Laurent-du-Var: The Cap3000 parking lot offers 3 free hours. It's the best option in the sector.
🔴 Nice: No free parking near the beaches and particularly the Promenade des Anglais.
From Villefranche to Menton
🔴 Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, 🔴 Villefranche, 🔴 Beaulieu, 🔴 Eze, 🔴 Cap d'Ail, 🔴 Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and 🔴 Menton: No free parking near the beaches in this entire sector. Paid parking is generalized. With a bit of luck, you can find free street parking in residential areas, but it is really rare.
Southern Alps
Plage des Tremouilles - Baie de Chanteloube © Rémi Morel / Office du Tourisme de Serre-Ponçon
Almost all bodies of water and beach parking lots in the Southern Alps are free with the exception of the parking for the Embrun lake (€7/day) and the one for Champsaur (€5/day).
On the Serre Ponçon lake, access to the Baie de Chanteloube parking costs €3.50.
In Savines-le-Lac, there are two paid parking lots near Combettes beach, but others are free a little further away.
In the Verdon
🟡 Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon (04): Parking on the lakeshore (like the Cabanon Parking) and at the lower entrance to the village is paid during the summer season (count about €4 to €5 per day).
🟡 Les Salles-sur-Verdon (83): This is the most expensive sector. The large parking lot that gives direct access to the largest beach on the lake costs about €8 per day in summer. A free shuttle runs from the top of the village to compensate.
🟡 Aiguines - Pont du Galetas (83): The Pont du Galetas Parking, located at the strategic point where the Verdon flows into the lake (departure for pedal boats and canoes), is paid in summer at a fixed rate of €5 per day. The good tip: There is a small free dirt parking lot about 500 meters upstream from the bridge on the D71 (full quickly from 9:30 a.m.).
🟢 Moustiers-Sainte-Marie (04): At La Cadeno beach and the Saint-Saturnin Parking, access via the track leads to free parking lots by the turquoise water, making them two very sought-after spots.
🔴 At Esparron-de-Verdon, parking lots are also paid on weekends in May, June, September, and every day in July and August to access the beach and the lake.
We will favor 🟢 Bauduen which offers free parking lots as well as 🟢 Quinson / 🟡 Montmeyan even if the area in direct proximity to the lake is paid.
🔴 At Saint-Julien le Montagnier, access to the beach on Lake Esparron is also paid at €4/day.
